Super Bowl Ads
Why limit great ideas to once a year risks?
Everyone knows that Super Bowl ads have become a major event in the national marketing world. The biggest brands want to stay on top by having millions talk
about their new spot. Smaller brands want to break into another class with a great new idea. And to do this, companies will release their tight grip on corporate jargon and let a creative idea slip out. But only once a year. I get the idea of stepping up one's game when the spotlight is brightest, but why don't we see more bold commercials throughout the year? Companies are able to come up with great ideas all year long, but they only risk these ideas during the most expensive moments of TV broadcasting. This year those 30-second "moments" will cost them $3.5 Million!
Look at Old Spice. They built a new identity with a crazy new idea (if you are one of the few people in the world who haven't experienced the bizarre brilliance, click here. They didn't wait for a big moment to release the campaign, they just had a crazy idea and took a risk. A risk that made people on the internet go crazy (that video has almost 40 million views on Youtube). But, it wasn't the first time that Old Spice tried to go outside the box. They had a brief campaign of equal absurdity with Bruce Campbell. Watch an ad here. This campaign wasn't entirely unsuccessful, but people didn't talk about it the way that they do with the newest series of ads. I think the lesson is to be brave. Be willing to take a risk, at any time. It might take a couple tries, but creativity does pay off.
Happy Super Bowl ads everyone. Let us know which your favorites are this year!
