AMA, Videotape, and Mike Esser

Video. It's come a long way in the past few years in terms of how it's used on the web. At the AMA luncheon today speaker Mike Esser from Red Hat shared his views on where he thinks it's going. There's video content everywhere nowadays, some great, some not. But it's easily accessible. And personalized. He told his listeners to go to takethislollipop.com to see how one website gives an eery example of what could happen when you allow a website to access your facebook profile. Video is becoming customized to you. Marketers are able to target your interests, wants, and needs. Which he noted could be good and bad. Good for marketers who don't have to waste time finding their demographic, but depending on your personal preferences, good or bad for expanding your horizons or searching outside the box. For example, you may not want to see and find the same things on youtube as you do on facebook.

Mike gave great examples of how some companies are using video to tell their story. For example starbucks http://www.starbucks.com/. Go to their website and they have video stories featuring their roasters. Real, seemingly down to earth employees who tell you about the variety of roasts starbucks has to offer.

Also, companies like Red Hat are now, seemingly, more than ever seeing the value of using videos internally. Using videos as tools for training and recruiting. In the past few years, his team alone has tripled its video productions in house.

After a discussion with the crowd, it all came down to storytelling. You can have the equipment, and the ideas, but it boils down to if and how you tell the story you set out to tell. It doesn't have to be a hollywood production to get your message across. But you need a great producer to facilitate the right questions in order to get the end result you are looking for. So share what you learned at the presentation or what your experience has been.  We'd love to hear your thoughts!
